TYPES OF DANDRUFF

Types of Dandruff

Dandruff can be classified into two types: dry dandruff or Pityriasis simplex and greasy dandruff or Pityriasis steatoides. Below is an explanation of each type of dandruff:

Dry dandruff

Dry dandruff or Pityriasis simplex is the most common dandruff. In most cases it is chronic, but it usually presents periods of greater and lesser severity.

Dry dandruff is characterized by the formation of fine flakes that can fall off after combing or spontaneously. It usually occurs in large amounts.

In this type of dandruff, the scalp is dry and rough. It may also itch slightly.

Oily dandruff

Oily dandruff or Pityriasis steatoides is caused by a flaking scalp associated with seborrhea. It is characterized by greasy, shiny hair with thicker, larger yellowish scales that can stick to the scalp.

Oily dandruff can cause erythema (redness of the skin) and itching.

Other associated conditions

Dandruff is often confused with other disorders such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, which also lead to flaking of the skin and the appearance of small whitish flakes. However, it is important not to confuse these conditions with dandruff, as their treatment is completely different from that of dandruff.
